    Kia Picanto - Overview

Introduced back in 2013, the Kia Picanto is the A-segment alternative to the local representatives. The B-segment Perodua Myvi and Proton Iriz - which are sold around the same price range. While some might argue that comparing the three might be a disadvantage to the Picanto, simply because of the class segments, the reality is that the baby Kia is the cheapest among the two and just by face It's value is also the best in its class. Today we’ll be having a look at the third-generation Picanto and see what’s in store for the 2019 model.

  • Exterior

    Kia Picanto - Exterior

The new Picanto model has edgier lines and a more purposeful design. It is a far cry from the cheeky image that it had in the previous model with its big protruding mouth matched with large ‘eyes’ on each side, which left one thinking, it has a bit of a cartoonish face. The latest version also houses the new halogen reflector and LED combination tail lamps that give it that modern look. The rear bumper has a more curvaceous shape giving it a fuller and complete feel as compared to the old one.
It comes with standard 14' inch alloy wheels that somehow seems to fill the wheel arches very well, and while it still has the same stance as the older version, the designs on the new model seem to compliment the overall sporty design.

    Length3,595 mm
    Width1,595 mm
    Height1,485 mm
    Wheelbase2,400 mm

    Kia Picanto - Interior

The cabin space is definitely an upgrade from the older one. Its predecessor came with a simple dashboard setup, which seemed fitting for the time. This model might be cheaper than the older version, starting from RM 49,888 as compared to the older one where it started at RM54,888, but That doesn’t mean that it falls short on its infotainment.
The new dashboard houses a 7.0-inch Touchscreen Radio with CD, MP3, AUX, USB, Bluetooth right in the middle of it - which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto - for better visibility for both the driver and passenger. And it doesn't end there. This new version comes with 3 cupholders (2 at the front and 1 at the rear), 2 power sockets (both in the front) and it has 6 speakers all around.

  • Features

    Kia Picanto - Features

Even at a base range of RM 49,888, Kia pulled out all the stops when it comes to safety. The Picanto has 6 Airbags (Driver and Passenger, Front Side, Front and Rear Curtain), an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and an Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) that ensures that each wheel gets the right amount of braking force when it comes to hard braking as standard. Besides that, it also comes equipped with a seatbelt reminder that is available for all passengers, stability control, 3 rear parking sensors, keyless operation alarm system and reverse camera, these features are all an upgrade from the previous model.
However, it’s not all good news with the little Picanto. It has a few drawbacks if you're planning to get one. Firstly, the latest version doesn’t come with a manual gearbox as an option, while this might sound great for most people, car enthusiasts might find the engine pretty laggy. Also, if you’re planning to use this as your family vacation car, you might have to re-think that. With only a booth space of only 255 litres, it's definitely the smallest in its range, especially if you have a family of five. And finally, with the Picanto only being 3,595 mm (fairly average for its class) the space for the rear passengers is quite tight and might not be as comfortable to drive long distances as compared to its competitors.

  • Powertrain

    Kia Picanto - Powertrain

Under the bonnet of the Picanto is a 1.2 litre Kappa II 16-Valve, Dual overhead cam engine (DOHC), naturally aspirated with Dual Variable Valve Timing that makes 82 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 122 Nm at 4,000 RPM. While this engine is not what you call a ‘small pocket rocket’, however, consider this, the Picanto has a more lively 4-speed automatic gearbox and adding to the fact that the Picanto is only just over 980 kg, makes this perky little engine get up and go, the Picanto is seemingly designed to tackle the urban jungle.
That being said, it doesn’t mean that the Picanto wouldn’t fit well cruising over the North Express Highway. With a reported top speed of 130 km/h, some owners believe that for a small vehicle, the steering wheel doesn’t rattle at high speeds, while some even believe that the Picanto also has a more comfortable ride as compared to some of its local competitors, due to the build quality of Kia.
The suspension is also something that we can rave about. The small, nimble, easy to park Picanto can absorb bumps and road imperfections (which there are many in Malaysia) with ease, its direct and precise handling, together with its impressive sound insulation, the Picanto is very close to what you would expect from a European car.

  • Fuel Comusmption

    Kia Picanto - Fuel Economy

The fuel consumption is estimated at 5.8 litres per 100 km (5.8 L/100 km), with a fuel tank of 35 litres. That being said, there are reviews online that you could find some light-footed owners out there going nearly 13.0 km/litre (7.7 L/100 km)
However, in the fuel economy section based on price range, the only direct competitor for the Picanto in this segment would be the Bezza, with an estimated 4.7L/100km and a slightly bigger fuel tank (36 Liters), it would give the Picanto a run for its money, especially when the Bezza base price starting from RM35,391.

  • Conclusion

    Kia Picanto - Conclusion

The third generation baby Kia is a fun, reliable, well spec little car that looks as comfortable popping by the shops or as a daily driver on the busy streets of Kuala Lumpur. It’s a big step up from the Myvi and Iriz, even though they belong to the bigger segment. While it might have some faults, many would see Picanto as a perfect alternative to its local competitor as it continues finding its place in the Malaysian market quite comfortably, especially for its price range.
