The Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 is one of the hottest commodities on the local new-car market, especially with the monumental mark-ups that dealers have been piling on the sport-utility vehicle (SUV).

But the LC300’s days of ruling the roost (and thus, holding buyers hostage with pricing) may soon be numbered with the latest generation of its long-running Japanese rival, the Nissan Patrol.

Australian automotive publication Drive secured spyshots of the upcoming Patrol undergoing testing in the United States.

Although the unit was still camouflaged, there are indications of the new styling, such as the possibility of split LED headlights and a trapezoidal grill similar to the current Patrol.

This treatment would be similar to the Patrol’s more luxurious sibling, the Infiniti QX80, which was unveiled in concept form earlier this year.

Down the side, a high beltline is most apparent, leading the eye to a formal rear end that includes a large tailgate spoiler.

Much like the QX Monograph concept SUV, the indentations of the LED taillights seem to show clusters that span the entire length of the tailgate.

The all-new Patrol is taking the same approach as the Land Cruiser by replacing its naturally aspirated V8 engine with a twin-turbocharged V6 that is expected to produce more power for the same or better fuel economy.
