After a long hiatus, the Supra marks Toyota’s return in the performance-driven, 2-door premium sports car segment. Banking on the rich heritage of the Supra, it embodies all the characteristic traits that a performance sports car should possess. Power is of utmost importance and this comes courtesy of a BMW-sourced, 3.0-liter, inline-6, twin-scroll turbocharged gasoline engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission that's capable of generating 335 hp and 500 Nm of torque.

     01

    History

The Toyota Supra is a high-performance sports car produced by Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan from 1978 to 2002. Initially, the Supra was a luxury version of the 6-cylinder engine of the Toyota Celica. Starting in 1986, the Supra became a separate sports car that had nothing to do with the Celica. In the first generation, the Celica XX in Japan, or which is marketed under the name Celica Supra for export is the Celica Liftback whose wheelbase is longer to accommodate a 6-cylinder engine.

The machines available are M 2000 cc, 4M 2600 cc, and 5M 2800 cc. This car has 5 generations till now. for the Fifth Generation (2019-present) was introduced at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, United States on January 14, 2019. Production began in March 2019 and went on sale in Japan on May 17, 2019, in the United States on 22 July 2019 and in Australia on 2 September 2019. In addition, this car is also produced for the Asian region such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines etc.

    Launch

The fifth-generation Supra was released initially released in the Philippines on July of 2019 as the GR Supra, which is part of Toyota's Gazoo Racing (GR) line of performance cars. The current-generation J29/DB Supra is the direct successor to the A80 Supra. Developed in partnership with BMW, the GR Supra features the same chassis and dimensions as the BMW Z4. It even uses a 3.0-liter inline-six BMW engine with a twin-scroll turbo. The said power plant produces 335 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Despite sharing platforms and engines, the GR Supra is not exactly a clone of the BVMW Z4 as Toyota has infused a lot of its own style and features. Here in the Philippines, the GR Supra is available in a single variant with 2 color choices to choose from with a starting price of 4,990,000 to 5,050,000. There are only 16 Toyota dealerships in the Philippines that are capable of servicing a brand-new GR Supra.

    Variant and Price

Toyota GR Supra 2022 is a 2 Seater Coupe available at a price of ₱4.99 Million in the Philippines. It is available in 8 colors, 1 variants, 1 engine, and 1 transmissions option: Automatic in the Philippines.

    • Toyota GR Supra 3.0L A/T (Black Metallic 2) - ₱ 5,050,000

  • Exterior

Taking design inspiration from Toyota’s FT-1 concept a few years ago, the GR Supra evokes driving emotion. It comes with proper sporty styling traits such as a long hood, sloping “double-bubble” roof and short decklid with spoiler. The sleek side profile of the Toyota GR Supra feature vents on top of the front fender with a wide rear fender treatment and several carbon fiber aerodynamic enhancements. Structure-wise, the GR Supra utilizes BMW’s Cluster Architecture (CLAR) that’s also used in the Z4, 5 Series, 3 Series and other BMW’s. This technology elevates the build quality of the GR Supra to BMW levels as to how everything works and feels. In the Philippines, the GR Supra is available in either prominence red or the more expensive black metallic exterior color.

     01

The lights were positioned inward as much as possible both front and rear to accentuate the fender volume, paying homage to the 2000 GT and the 1993 A80 Toyota Supra.

     02

As opposed to the BMW Z4 retractable hardtop, the Toyota gets its very own unique swoopy double bubble hardtop and a seamlessly integrated rear lip spoiler. Its curvaceous silhouette is reminiscence of the works from Italian bespoke coachbuilder Zagato.

     03

Fitted as standard are a set of 19-inch five twin-spoke two-tone alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres. 255/35 up front and a wider 275/35 at the rear. Colour options available are the White Metallic, Silver Metallic, Ice Grey Metallic, Black Metallic, Matte Strom Grey Metallic, Lighting Yellow and Prominence Red.

Upfront the performance car gets the full LED treatment for its headlights, tail lights, turn signals, reverse lights, daytime running lights, and fog lights. The headlights also come with auto high beam. At the rear, the Supra has dual exhaust pipes just below the bumper. It rides on staggered 19-inch wheels in order to maximize grip at the rear.

    Wheels

The Toyota Supra has wheel sizes (aka rim sizes) including but not limited to 18 X 9, 18 X 10 or 19 X 9 inches

  • Interior

The Interior of the Toyota GR Supra is functional with a strong emphasis on driver position. The pair of bucket seats positioned low in the cabin and bolstered at the right places like a proper bucket seat. There are even slots for adding an aftermarket 4-point safety harness if you wish.

Despite being mostly all-black the interior uses different materials and textures such as leather, aluminum and even carbon fiber, creating a perfect driving ambience. Like most sports cars, the transmission tunnel sits high in the middle for precise more precise shifts. The LCD gauge panel is easy to read and the interface is slightly similar to the ones found on the Toyota 86.

     01

    Dashboard

Up front, the driver is greeted by Toyota’s very own high-definition digital driver’s instrument display, one of the few Toyota parts found in the cabin. A central positioned tachometer and shift-timing indicator reminds you that you are in a serious piece of machine.

Asymmetrical centre console envelops the driver while the padded pillars serves as a leg bolster when negotiating corner at speed. Black leather upholstery dominates the interior with carbon fibre trims. The 8-way power adjustable leather seats are racing-inspired, with integrated memory function for the driver.

    Space&practicality

On the interior, some of the advantages of the Toyota Supra on the interior include the relatively spacious cabin size. So that users will certainly feel more comfortable, even though there are only two seats available. This is because this type of Toyota Supra car is included in the same type of sports car as the Toyota 86, so there are only 2 seats provided. The driving position is excellent with low sitting position but with less-than-ideal rear visibility. Interior space is adequate for two. For a performance sportscar, the boot is more usable than the humble 290-litre claimed volume suggests.

    Boot

For the boot is still able to accommodate two large suitcases.

  • Driving Performance

Just like the previous 4th generation Supra, the latest one also comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine. The difference is that this one uses a twin-scroll turbocharger system and packs more power. An 8-speed automatic gearbox channels all the power produced to the rear wheels. The engine is capable of generating 335 hp and 500 Nm of torque propelling the GR Supra from 0-100 kmh in 4.4 seconds.

      2022 Toyota GR Supra Powertrain

      • Engine 3.0L BMW B58B30 Turbocharged Inline-6 Gasoline
      • Power - 335 hp
      • Torque - 500 Nm
      • Transmission   8-Speed ZF Automatic

Powering the rear wheels is BMW’s ultrasmooth B58 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder twin-scroll turbo engine with direct injection, developing 388 PS at 5,800 rpm and 500 Nm of torque from 1,800 rpm. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h and century sprint is completed in 4.1 seconds with launch control function.

In sport mode, engine sound changes and throttle response sharpened, accompanied by a more aggressive shift pattern, damping, steering and active differential performance. A special "track" setting can be selected which reduces the level of intervention from the Vehicle Stability System.

       01

      Transmission

Power is sent to the rear wheel via a tried and tested 8-speed ZF automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Gearshift is smooth and refined but less performance oriented compared to the more effective PDK dual clutch transmission available in the Porsche 718 Cayman. Purist will be gutted to find that there is no manual version announced as of yet.

      Fuel consumption

The Toyota Supra is capable of consuming 24 mpg of fuel or 10.2 kilometers per liter in urban areas, 31 mpg or about 13.1 kilometers per liter on roads outside the city, and 26 mpg or 11 kilometers per liter if the two conditions are combined.

    • Ride Comfort

The new Toyota GR Supra comes fitted with Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) featuring double-joint spring MacPherson struts at the front and a five-link axle at the rear. Paired with lightweight aluminium and steel composite frame with high body rigidity allows for a more precise and detailed refinements to the suspension geometry. The overall result is a surprisingly supple and comfortable ride but also sporty when pushed near its limit.

The front suspension subframe and control arm mounting points have been made extremely rigid to ensure it corners with precision. A perfect 50:50 weight distribution is achieved thanks to the front-engine rear-wheel-drive layout which allowed for a neutral and agile handling characteristic.

    • Conclusion

Despite sharing most of what it has with the BMW Z4, the Toyota engineers and designers have done what they can to differentiate the GR Supra and give it a character all its own. But most importantly, there’s no denying its real-world performance capabilities. From its driving dynamics to the power delivery from the boosted straight six, the GR Supra is an exhilarating performance sports coupe.
