The Forester marks Subaru Philippines' entry in the compact crossover segment where it enjoys a huge following. Aside from having Subaru’s world-famous Symmetrical Full-Time All-Wheel Drive technology, it also shares the same platform with the Impreza and XV subcompact crossover. The current generation Forester embodies the latest Subaru safety and tech features which is a good thing. This includes the updated 4.0 version of Subaru’s EyeSight with additional advanced driver assist technologies. Here in the Philippines, the Forester is powered by a naturally aspirated, 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder 16-valve Boxer engine that’s mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) generating 156 hp and 196 Nm of torque. The Subaru Forester is available in three variants with a price range of ₱1,938,000 to ₱2,170,000 for the top spec variant.

    Launch

The fifth-generation Subaru Forester was unveiled during the 2018 New York International Auto Show. Just like other models in Subaru’s line-up, the Forester is built around Subaru’s Global Platform (SGP) that it shares with the Impreza and XV subcompact crossover. The new platform promises to give greater handling capability, agility, ride comfort and crash protection. In 2021, the Forester received a facelift that was initially released in North America for the 2022 model year. It featured a new front end, exterior changes as well as a slightly tweaked rear bumper while retaining the same powertrain. It also came with an updated fourth-generation EyeSight driver-assist system. Here in the Philippines, the latest Forester comes in three variants with the corresponding price points.

  • Driving Performance

     01

    Engine performance

At a kerb weight of around 1,500 kg, power is sufficient rather than stonking.

    Transmission performance

The CVT mimics a traditional automatic transmission for a more natural feel and response is reasonably quick.

    Steering and Handling

Steering is direct but not quite as sharp as the Mazda 3. It goes through corners with minimal body roll and holds its line confidently, which a quite a feat for an SUV.

  • Ride Comfort

    Sound proofing

Cabin noise is commendably low. Mechanical noises are very well suppressed but wind noise becomes apparent at highway speeds.

    Passenger comfort

The suspension is on the stiffer side but still remains reasonably pliant over broken surfaces. The rear seat bench is a little flat and could do with a more inclined angle.

  • Fuel Economy

The Subaru Forester is rated at 7.4 litre/100 km in combined driving conditions.

  • Conclusion

The current Subaru Forester continues its tradition of prioritizing function that’s centered around the driver and what the vehicle needs to do properly and safely. Something that’s evident on its latest exterior appearance, but what really matters is all the technology and standard features that’s neatly hidden underneath all that. As one of the most popular all-wheel drive SUV’s on the market, the Subaru Forester certainly has a lot to offer in terms of safety and performance.
