With over 2.6m EV chargers nationwide, China now ranks the first globally

Electric vehicle (EV) charging points in China have increased exponentially, reaching 2.6 million nationwide, according to the China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance (EVCIPA).

EVCIPA is an alliance that unites EV manufacturers, power grid companies, charging infrastructure manufacturers and operators, and third-party charging infrastructure agencies. The alliance promotes innovation and collaborations, and makes policy recommendations to the government of China.

According to EVCIPA, 936,000 charging points were added in 2021 alone, which is an increase of 70.1 percent year-on-year.

The exponential growth is attributed to the popularity of EVs in China, which is the world's largest market, as well as government agencies that supported the adoption of EVs.

According to the survey, there are 1.147 million public charging points, 43 percent or thereabouts of all charging points. Around 470,000 charging points are DC fast chargers, 677,000 are AC chargers, while the remaining are a mix of both.

More than 70% of EV charging points in China are located in major cities. These include Guangdong, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Beijing, Zhejiang, Shandong, Hubei, Henan and Fujian.

In 2021, China's total electricity charging rate was 11.15 million kWh, an increase of 58% compared to the previous year. Buses, passenger cars, and sanitation vehicles consumed the most electricity. It is expected that the demand for electricity will continue to increase over the next several years.

It is also expected that EV sales will continue its growth in the upcoming months, as the state government announced a 30 percent reduction in EV subsidies and will eliminate all subsidies by 2023. The consumers are expected to flock to buy an EV.

Sales of new energy vehicles in China are projected to increase to 5 million vehicles per year in 2022 and between 7 to 10 million vehicles in 2025.
