The all-new Toyota Wigo is set to launch in the Philippines very soon, but the question on everyone’s mind is if the small hatchback will retain its 1.0-liter engine or if it will receive a 1.2-liter motor increasing its power.

The new Wigo is reportedly coming out in July for Toyota Motor Philippines and will bring a new exterior design, features, and a new CVT.

We will now compare the 1.0 and 1.2-liter based on the claimed manufacturer fuel efficiency figures. These aren’t the exact fuel economy figures you will encounter with the hatchback once it makes its Philippine debut.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1686500526235-0'); });

You can only use these figures as a general guideline for what you can expect from the all-new Toyota Wigo once it arrives in the Philippines.

What's the fuel economy like for the 1.0?

While reviews of the new Toyota Wigo with the 1.0-liter motor and a CVT are available online, these are either in Vietnamese or Indonesia, creating a language barrier when trying to figure out the fuel economy figures of the small hatchback.

However, thanks to our friends from Autofun Indonesia, we got fuel efficiency figures based on their testing for the hatchback with the 1.0-liter and 1.2-liter. However, these figures were from the Toyota Agya and Perodua Axia, the mechanical twins of the Toyota Wigo.

For context, the 1.0-liter fuel efficiency figures were taken from the Axia, while the 1.2-liter figures were taken from the Agya.

Based on the Malaysia Driving Cycle, the 1.0-liter motor can do between 23.3 to 27.4km/l for the versions of the small hatchback with the D-CVT. This isn’t bad, considering the current and local Toyota Wigo does around 20km/l on the highway with its older 4-speed automatic.

Based on these numbers has improved by a substantial amount, as Daihatsu has reported that the 1.0-liter engine equipped with the new CVTs is expected to see an increase in fuel efficiency of about 16%.

What about the 1.2-liter?

As for the fuel economy figures for the 1.2-liter motor, the Toyota Agya equipped with a CVT was able to do 21km/l while the Agya with the manual transmission could do 21.7km/l. It shows that their manual transmission version of the hatchback is slightly more efficient but by a negligible amount.

So which is more fuel efficient?

Rember that the new 1.2 engine produces 88 PS and 113 Nm, which is 22 PS and 24 Nm more than the 1.0-liter engine. That extra power comes at a price when looking at the fuel economy figures above. The 1.2-liter motor isn't as fuel efficient as its 1.0-liter counterpart; the smaller engine is at least 2 to 6km/l more efficient than its bigger displacement brother.

That said, it is still up to Toyota Philippines to decide what engine to use for the new Wigo. If they bring the 1.0-liter with the new CVT, they can keep the small hatchback's fuel efficiency which will be its strong point in the market, especially as its only rival is now Honda Brio. The Kia Picanto, once a Toyota Wigo alternative, has been removed by the South Korean automaker, and it looks like it doesn't plan to bring it back.

If Toyota Philippines does bring in the 1.2-liter with the new Wigo, it would be at the cost of lower fuel efficiency numbers. Still, it could be more beneficial to the nameplate, especially when comparing it to the Brio.

For now, it's a waiting game to see what Toyota Philippines will do next with the impending launch of the next-generation Toyota Wigo.
