The 2024 Toyota Wigo has officially launched in the Philippine market,

It comes in three new variants, a new exterior, new features and competitive pricing to keep its position as a top-selling small city hatchback.

However, when we were predicting the pricing for the new model, we said it would be higher than before and would push the suggested retail price of the hatchback to the ₱800,000 range.

But thankfully, we were proven wrong following its official launch in the country. That said, here are a few things we got right and wrong with our Toyota Wigo predictions.

window.googletag = window.googletag || {cmd: []}; googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || []; googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot('/22557728108/ph_article_fourthp_under_pc', [ 728, 90 ], 'div-gpt-ad-1686500526235-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); googletag.pubads().collapseEmptyDivs(); googletag.enableServices(); });
googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1686500526235-0'); });

We were expecting Toyota Philippines to bring in the all-new 2024 Toyota Wigo with the 1.2-liter gasoline motor found in the Toyota Raize.

However, we found out earlier on that the Wigo would be retaining its 1.0-liter motor

And thanks to our friends from our other AutoFun bureaus, we also found out that the Toyota Wigo with the 1.2-liter motor has lower fuel economy figures compared to the old 1.0-liter motor.

In the spirit of keeping to its frugal nature, Toyota Motor Philippines chose to keep the 1.0-liter motor for the all-new Wigo, retaining its 68 PS and 89 Nm of torque power figures.

However, the Japanese automaker did add a new Daihatsu Dual-Mode Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) to make better use of its power output while increasing its fuel economy.

Pricing

What we got right was the estimated pricing for the entry-level model, which was within our estimate of ₱600,000 to ₱650,000.

The Wigo J MT is priced at ₱609,000, which is very close to our lower-end estimate.

What we didn’t get right was our overall estimate for the top-spec model of the 2024 Toyota Wigo. We pegged it around ₱800,000, which was wrong as the actual model only came in at ₱729,000.

This significantly undercuts the CVT variants of the recently updated Honda Brio and the aging Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback.

No Toyota Safety Sense

While we initially suspected that Toyota would bring in the 2024 Toyota Wigo with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) active-safety suite, we were wrong.

Nonetheless, the automaker brought in the new hatchback with anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control and dual front airbags as standard. They did include a digital video recorder, but only for the G model.

However, thanks to this move, Toyota was able to keep the pricing of the Wigo competitive because adding TSS may have skyrocketed its price to nearly ₱800,000.

With the new Toyota Wigo retaining its competitive pricing, TMP may have another hit on its hands, especially with what the new hatchback offers. We just hope they add power-adjustable side mirrors to the J and E variants to make them a bit more competitive.
