NLEX implements Candaba Viaduct counterflow scheme on Nov. 3-4

Heavy traffic congestion is expected in parts of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) because of roadworks from Nov. 3 to 4, 2022.

The NLEX Corporation, which operates the 102-kilometer toll road, said in a Nov. 2, 2022 Facebook post that a counterflow scheme will be implemented on the northbound lane of the Candaba Viaduct because of a safety upgrade on the southbound side.

The counterflow will be three kilometers long and will last from 8 p.m. on Nov. 3 to 4 a.m. on Nov. 4.

The Candaba Viaduct, which was finished in 1976 and opened the year after, is five kilometers long and goes through the towns of Pulilan and Calumpit in Bulacan and Apalit town in Pampanga. 

It was the longest bridge in the Philippines from 1976 to 2022, when it was surpassed by the 8.9-kilometer Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) that crosses the Mactan Channel in Cebu.

Both NLEX and CCLEX are operated by the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation of billionaire tycoon Manny Pangilinan.
