If you’re a fan of the Toyota Hilux, then no doubt you’re interested in what the next-generation model will look like.

Given that the next Hilux is still around two years away, it’s unlikely that leaks give away any renders or patent images at this time. Chances are, they’re still deciding what design language to go with on such an important project.

However, Toyota itself might offer a clue. The Japanese carmaker included a rendering of a pick-up truck in a 2023 patent submission.

This could be for the upcoming Toyota Tacoma or the basis of the next Hilux.

The most notable aspect of this pick-up is the cargo bed, which looks very solid with its square shape and vertical tail lights. This is the most likely final design, as it comes directly from Toyota.

Dynamic Hilux renders

Nonetheless, other car artists have brought out their version of the next-generation Hilux.

The first is a rendering done by artist Dimas Ramadhan, under his Digimod Designs moniker.

Front and rear designs have elements lifted off the current Toyota Fortuner, while the front grill and bumper are a more subtle nod to the new Toyota New Global Architecture platform, which the new Hilux is expected to share with the Tacoma.

From the back, however, this rendering has a strange aesthetic on the rear, using what looks to be Toyota Corolla Cross tail lights and a curvaceous cargo bed, clearly lifted from a crossover like the Highlander.

Aside from that, Digimod has given the Hilux a cyber makeover, thanks to rumors that it might be powered by a mild-hybrid diesel powertrain or even a fully electric powertrain.

That makes sense since Toyota presented a concept electric vehicle based on the Hilux chassis on December 2022. 

This particular prediction is far more striking, with a front fascia that resembles the new Toyota Prius and edgy, angular tail lights that really make the Hilux look thoroughly modern.

Certainly, it's no longer the agricultural workhorse its forebears might have been, but it still looks like it can hack it off-road.

All in all, the 2025 Toyota Hilux looks like it’s going to be quite the stunner when it’s revealed. But with such an important car, all eyes will be looking at the stage when the covers are pulled off.
