The production version of the Lexus LF-ZC concept luxury electric vehicle is slated to make its global debut in 2026.

Even though Toyota Motor Company and its luxury division, Lexus, were late to commit to electric vehicles (EV), they certainly aren’t pulling any punches.

Lexus unveiled the all-new LF-ZC EV concept at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show on Oct. 25, 2023. The company said in a press statement that the production version of the futuristic, battery-electric hatchback will officially be launched in 2026.

The LF-ZC (short for Lexus Future Zero-emission Catalyst) forms part of Lexus’ commitment to exclusively sell EVs by the year 2035.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1686500526235-0'); });

The transition involves a developing new modular structure, implementing cutting-edge production technology and fully integrating a comprehensive, new software platform.

The LF-ZC looks like a Toyota Prius from far into the future, utilizing sharp lines and angles that create a wedge shape with a formal rear deck, resulting in a profile that is expected to have a drag coefficient of under 0.20.

The front end features a low-slung hood with boomerang-style LED headlights that are already signature design elements on current Lexus models.

Meanwhile, the spindle body design extends beyond the front face and seamlessly continues along the door sides and rear bumper. The rear wheel flares are accentuated, achieving a balance between high aerodynamic performance and a wide stance.

At the back, a hatchback design is employed with a thin LED taillight that extends all the way into the rear fenders. Aerodynamic elements like air intakes and outlets create an emotionally engaging and unique exterior that delivers no compromise between aesthetics and efficiency.

The LF-ZC is no less dramatic when you step inside what Lexus calls the “Intelligent Cockpit.”

Front occupants sit in a low, forward position, with the fully flat floor and panoramic roof making the vehicle more spacious.

The integration of the new software platform "Arene OS" interface allows continuous updates of functions in line with the evolving times, including advanced safety technology and multimedia features.

The "eyes on the road" principle is applied by adopting a set-back meter display that projects information onto the front windshield, as if you were piloting a fighter jet. Additionally, digital mirrors are installed on both sides of the vehicle that offer an unobstructed cockpit view.

The luxury EV also uses advanced A.I. technology, with a next-generation voice recognition system that provides customers with a service experience reminiscent of conversing with an attentive and accommodating butler.

Throughout the interior, the Bamboo CMF (Color, Material, Finish) Concept represents Lexus's unique sustainability efforts, focusing on circular resource use while delivering fresh experiential value to customers through an innovative interior design.

Gigacast structure

The LF-ZC is built on a next-generation EV platform that uses gigacasting, which splits the vehicle body into three parts: front, center and rear.

This construction method, Lexus said, provides greater freedom of form, while the integration of parts also increases rigidity for linear and natural vehicle dynamics.

Made with a prismatic structure, the batteries are engineered to increase range through improved aerodynamic integration and weight reduction, enhancing vehicle efficiency and battery performance.

Additionally, high energy density is achieved by simplifying and compacting the battery structure, allowing for the integration of more energy into the vehicle.

The LF-ZC is expected to feature improved versions of driving technologies found in existing Lexus EV models, such as the DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system and the natural, linear steering feel provided by Steer-by-Wire.
