Lexus files a trademark for LFA nameplate hinting at a new generation EV or hybrid 01

Lexus US patents LFA name indicating plans for a new generation of the performance car to come.

Lexus announced in 2021 that it would be making a spiritual successor to the Lexus LFA, one of its most popular performance cars with a screaming V10. While the model may still be a few years away, Toyota Motor Corporation and, by extension, Lexus have filed a new trademark application for the “LFA” word mark in August with the US Patent and Trademark Office.

The new model could resemble the Lexus Electrified Sport concept that the Japanese brand teased nearly two years ago with its sleek styling and Toyota Supra-like proportions.

With the trademark, Lexus has provided a few preliminary specifications for the new vehicle, stating that it could be a battery electric vehicle with technology from the old LFA model.

Impressive range and speculated performance

The Japanese luxury brand states that the new vehicle can do 0 to 100 in the low two-second range, offering a maximum driving range of about 700 kilometers. It will also reportedly come with steer-by-wire, torque vectoring, and carbon fiber.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1686500526235-0'); });

As for its battery pack, Lexus will reportedly use new solid-state batteries, but Toyota won’t be using the new battery technology just yet as it plans to utilize them for its 2025 models.

Lexus has yet to reveal the drivetrain configuration for the new LFA, but we suspect it will have a single or dual-motor setup. Rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options are still on the table, but nothing is confirmed.

An EV with a manual?

The new LFA might have a manual transmission to keep it within the spirit of driving. It may be an electric vehicle, but the Japanese luxury brand wants to simulate the manual gearbox experience with its software.

It's a waiting game to see what Lexus will have in store, but we suspect they may reveal the new concept car at the Japan Mobility Show.
