2022 Honda City: How Its Automotive Powertrain Work 01

The subcompact sedan Honda City has been around in the Philippines for more than 25 years now, and since then, it has been selling steadily in its category until 2020. What could have been the reason its sales dropped in 2020? A dip in sales can be caused by different factors. Notwithstanding the recent pandemic, we all had to deal with. But in the case of the Honda City, was it just because of the pandemic, or was there something unappealing under its hood?

Truth be told, the Honda City has never been number one in its category as the Toyota Vios has been leading the market in terms of sales. But that doesn't mean that the engine and transmission package under its hood is not up to par. In fact, the City is regarded as one of the most well-performing subcompact sedans available at an affordable price. The components under its hood have proven to be reliable and capable enough over the years to give a fun drive.

Giving life to the 7th generation Honda City is a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated i-VTEC gasoline engine. It churns out 121 ps and 145 Nm of torque mated to either a CVT or 5-speed manual transmission. That proven powertrain makes it possible for the Honda City to drive smoothly on the road. Because of the responsive throttle, the power kicks in immediately making it an exciting car to drive. Its smooth steering makes it easy to maneuver.

However, the CVT does have its own drawbacks. The rubber band effect when accelerating is a common issue among cars with this transmission. Fortunately for the City, it doesn't hinder the driver that much. Because of the engine's ample torque, there's also no need to floor the Honda City's accelerator too hard.

To sum it up, under the hood of the Honda City is nothing but sophistication and decency. And even if sales dipped, it wouldn't have been because of its performance. The wide range of trim and engine options that Toyota offers with the Vios though could have been its undoing. Perhaps the City was a victim of its own excellence?
