Toyota still leads global sales, Toyota RAV4 is best-selling car in 2022 - JATO Dynamics report 01

According to JATO Dynamics, the Toyota RAV4 accounts for more than one million units sold globally in 2022.

The JATO Dynamics research data confirms Toyota is the largest automaker in the world. Sales figures from the Japanese automaker were so good that according to the report, 13 out of every 100 cars sold in 2022 was a Toyota.

The automaker also saw a 0.3 percent increase in global sales thanks to its excellent performance in the Chinese market, now its largest market ahead of the US and Japan. This is despite the global 2% decline in new car registrations from 80.7 million in 2021 to 79.4 million new vehicles registered globally in 2022.

More than just Toyota sales

There is more to the data that JATO Dynamics published than Toyota’s dominance in the global market.

Its report also showed that the Volkswagen Group had a great showing as the second-best-selling automotive conglomerate in the world in 2022, even with its decrease in sales by 10 percent.

Following Volkswagen was Hyundai-Kia in third, followed by Stellantis and General Motors.

BYD on the rise

BYD HAN EV

JATO Dynamics also reported that BYD was the fastest-growing manufacturer in 2022. The Chinese brand gained a 1.5 percent global share, more than what Toyota achieved, and this increased its total share to 2.42 percent of the worldwide market.

According to the sales data, the Chinese firm was also the second best-selling Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) manufacturer after Tesla.

BEVs continue to be a growing segment worldwide, with a total of 7.37 million units sold in 2022. It represents a growth of 2.9 million units sold compared to 2021.

Battery Electric Vehicles make up 9.3 percent of the global automotive market, showing a steady shift to this kind of mobility.

JATO Dynamics is a research think tank that has been focusing on the automotive industry since 1984. It provides automotive market intelligence to its clientele and creates insight to assist brands and manufacturers in their decision-making.

What do you think about Toyota’s sales dominance and the ongoing surge of BEVs?
