Even though the next-generation Toyota Innova has yet to debut in the Philippines, our neighbor Indonesia will start exporting the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in 2023.
Our colleagues at WapCar Malaysia reported that PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) has sent out its first batch of the all-new Innova Zenix Hybrid.
The completely built units will go to countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.
TMMIN aims to export more than 8,000 units of the all-new Innova in 2023, divided into 30 percent for the hybrid electric variants and 70 percent for the internal combustion models.
The company also expects export sales of the Innova Zenix to increase yearly, targeting 17,000 units by 2025.
“The first exports of electrified vehicles, starting with the Innova Zenix Hybrid, are part of Toyota Indonesia’s efforts to participate in achieving the Government's target of decarbonization, being a leading Green Economy and supporting the country’s trade balance,” said TMMIN president director Warih Andang Tjahjono.
Tjahjono added that the exported Innova Zenix Hybrids include locally assembled battery packs, in line with maintaining Indonesia’s position as a “key production and export base of electrified vehicles.”
“Toyota Indonesia has introduced various models of low carbon vehicles through our multi-pathway strategy, from fuel-efficient and biofuel vehicles, including our hybrid electric vehicles such as Innova Zenix Hybrid and even plug-in hybrid vehicles, and battery electric vehicles,” he said.
No more diesel
The 2023 Innova Zenix was launched in Indonesia on November 2022.
It is available with a 2.0-liter, twin-cam, 16-valve inline-4 gasoline engine producing 174 PS and 205 Nm of torque.
The MPV also has a hybrid version of the 2.0-liter engine that pumps out 186 PS and 393 Nm of torque.
The biggest news for the popular MPV is the dropping of the venerable 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine and the shift to a front-wheel-drive, unibody platform from the old rear-wheel-drive, ladder-frame design.
Toyota Motor Philippines still has no official word on when we will receive the next-generation Innova.
Do you think we can also start exporting Philippine-built Toyotas in the future?
