The next-generation Toyota Wigo is already accepting orders in Malaysia under the D74A Perodua Axia nameplate.

As the Toyota Wigo and the Axia share the same platform and body styling, this new model is what the Toyota small hatchback could look like for its next generation.

While complete specifications are not yet available for the new vehicle, Perodua has released an initial spec sheet highlighting its key features.

What to expect from the new Wigo

For its key features, the new Wigo (Axia) is expected to arrive with a 7-inch multi-info display, a 9-inch infotainment system, power drive mode, LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, a new front fascia, and overall bigger dimensions.

The new Wigo/ Axia will reportedly be safer than the previous model as it gains access to six airbags and an advanced safety assist (ASA) suite. It is still unclear what will be included in the safety suite.

While we have yet to determine the exact dimensions of the next-gen Toyota Wigo (Perodua Axia), our colleagues from Wapcar Malaysia were able to get information that the new vehicle could end up being a crossover instead of a hatchback. 

This information comes from a media conference that Wapcar attended with Perodua, where they asked its President and CEO, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, if the new Axia (Wigo) would be based on the X Concept car.

While the President and CEO didn’t confirm the X Concept as the next-gen Axia, he did mention that the model's dimensions will be much bigger than the current car.

Despite its bump in size, the next-gen Toyota Wigo is still expected to be smaller than its bigger stablemate, the Toyota Raize so it can maintain its A-segment positioning. 

Could the next-gen Wigo be a crossover?

The next-gen Toyota Wigo could come with a more crossover-styled model, as seen in the Axia Style model in Malaysia.

As a backgrounder, the Axia Style is a version of the Axia that comes with more body cladding and a more SUV-like design. The vehicle is also slightly taller and comes with a different front fascia.

Only time will tell if the new generation of the Toyota Wigo will come as a crossover, as little information is available.
