The Veloz is so great that Toyota made sure the top-tier Avanza has departed from the older segment and has created a new one. Still, there are things that we can nitpick from it. Here are some things we think the Veloz is a little downer on.
They share the same engine
The Veloz and the Avanza share the same engine – an in-line 4-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC with Dual VVT-i. Now you'd think the Veloz is a lot more different than the Avanza than a major facelift costing a couple hundred thousand pesos. Now, you're thinking twice. Let me tell you that they are completely different from each other, but those who obsess on the engine, and who buys according to the engine output and spec sheet might be disappointed to know this. Well, it is what it is. In the Veloz, you can also choose driving modes – power and eco – so there's that. Since we are nitpicking and thinking wishfully, perhaps a slightly bigger engine can fit the Veloz? You'd have to think of its repercussion to the transmission and the chassis design, as well as the price point. I think the same engine makes the Veloz a little more affordable than when its engine will be replaced.

The third row is still so narrow
This is something of a downer. You'd think that a bigger size vehicle should be able to come up with a bigger space for the third row, so the car won't be really a 5-seater with two jump seats when you need them. But no, they're still narrow. I guess this depends on the person who will sit there. Children and small adults can find themselves okay with the space though. For taller adults and long drives, this isn't a great combination. Tetris the people who will sit on which side of the car. And no, the sofa mode of the third row and the second row reclined wouldn't make up for the narrow third row.
The lower tier Veloz has no Toyota Safety Sense
Now the Veloz may be the top-tier Avanza but there are two variants for the Veloz – the G variant which starts at PhP 1.185 million to PhP 1.2 million, and the V variant which ends at PhP 1.240 million. The main difference of the two is the Toyota Safety Sense where a lot of safety features are included, including a system of sensors, cameras, airbags, to ensure the safety of the passengers of the Veloz. Now, why is this a problem? Well, if you're going to buy a G variant Veloz, what's the main difference between that and the new top-tier Avanza? Of course, the best choice is the V variant Veloz. Veloz with a V. Remember that.
