Geely Azkarra

Joining other car manufacturers in the hybrid crossover SUV segment is the 5-seater Geely Azkarra. Here in the Philippines, the Azkarra is offered as a single variant which is the Luxury. It comes powered by a 1.5-liter, inline-3 gasoline engine paired with a 48-volt motor. The combined powerplant generates up to 190 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to all of its wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The lone Luxury variant of the Azkarra comes with a plethora of features and comes with price of ₱1,788,000.  

Launch

Known as the Geely Boyue in China, this mild hybrid crossover SUV was initially launched in 2016, but it wasn’t until 2019 that it got a facelift and was exported overseas as the Azkarra. Here in the Philippines, Sojitz G Auto Philippines is the exclusive distributor of Geely. They were supposed to hold a formal launch of the Azkarra in March of 2020, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In spite of the situation, Sojitz G Auto Philippines instead hosted a formal online launch of the Azkarra in May of 2020. This makes the brand as one of the first automotive companies that hosted an online launch of a new car model.

The bodylines of the Azkarra is reflective of most SUV crossover silhouettes, but it adopts Geely’s own design features. Most notable being Geely’s signature expanding Cosmos front grille design which has become larger, more pronounced, and much more impactful. Aside from the rear roof mount spoiler and sleek LED headlamps, the exterior of the Azkarra has distinct character details and lines, creating a dynamic appearance. The Geely Azkarra is available in the following exterior colors, blue, red, black, silver and white.

The interior of the Geely Azkarra looks and feels premium all over. Starting with the Nappa Leather covered seats, in brown with textured inserts and supportive bolsters. The rest of the interior is predominantly black with brown leather and silver finished detail accents. The neatly executed dashboard features switches that are designed like a piano with tactile keys. The Azkarra offers a relaxing ambience with a panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting with 42 colors to choose from. There’s also plenty of trunk area to stow away luggage and cargo amounting to 320 liters of space.

Technology Feature

The Geely Azkarra comes with a 12.3-inch infotainment system with USB, auxiliary input and bluetooth connectivity to keep the occupants entertained. Coming as standard are four wide-angle 360-degree panoramic cameras. Located in key positions around the Azkarra, these cameras allow a field view of up to 90 meters. The footage from the cameras are then displayed on the infotainment screen. Dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless charging and a 7-inch LCD instrument panel are just some the tech features found on the Azkarra.

Safety Feature

Geely also puts a premium on safety with standard safety features with 6 airbags consisting of front, side and side curtain airbags. It even includes traction and stability control with Hill start assist. For added safety during sudden braking situations, there’s anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD). Something that other car manufacturers haven’t gotten around to yet is addressing occupant health concerns as the Azkarra even comes with a CN-95 air filter to help breathe in clean and healthier air.

Under the hood, the Geely Azkarra comes with a 1.5-liter, inline-3 cylinder, turbocharged engine mated to a seven speed automatic transmission. The engine is capable of generating 177 hp and 250 Nm of torque without the help of the electric motor. Like most mild-hybrid systems, the 48V EMS electric motor gives the gasoline engine additional power. In the case of the Azkarra, the combined power output of the gasoline and electric motor equates to 190 hp and 300 Nm of torque. This gives the Azkarra ample power with a great low-end torque that’s highly needed for everyday driving situations.

Platform and Chassis

The Geely Azkarra is a front-engine, all-wheel-drive hybrid, crossover SUV model. It uses the Geely NL platform, which it shares with the Geely Boyue that’s sold in China. The suspension system is composed of MacPherson struts up front, and a multi-link set up at the rear. For braking power, the Azkarra relies on ventilated front discs and solid discs at the rear with electronic parking brake for added convenience.

The Geely Azkarra looks and feels every bit of what a premium mild hybrid SUV crossover should be, considering its hefty price. Although it should’ve come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that’s getting to be a must have feature on today’s crop of modern vehicles.

But nevertheless, the Azkarra proves that that Geely is capable of manufacturing quality vehicle’s that come equipped with a host of tech and safety features that already come as standard.
