The XFC Concept crossover has been around since it was shown first in Vietnam last year. Mitsubishi even brought it in for a display last month at the Newport Mall.

Reports have also shown camouflaged units roaming the streets of Vietnam and Indonesia.

Today however,  our colleagues from Wapcar.my unearthed a possible name for the new crossover once it launches this coming August 10 at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show.

According to trademark registrations filed in Malaysia, the new crossover could be called the Mitsubishi Destinator. The same name has also been filed in Indonesia, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, and other countries outside ASEAN.

A quick search at the World Intellectual Property Office Global Brand Database shows the "Destinator" name was also registered by Mitsubishi Jidosha Kogyo Kabishiki Kaisha, or Mitsubishi Motors, with the IPO Philippines last October 13, 2022.

Now whether MMPC introduces the all-new crossover with the name is still unknown. Given how teasers can give clues as to what the market should expect, and that this crossover's teaser is screaming with the letter "X" and ends with the words, "Full Force", we think the name will include this letter and probably the word "Force" one way or another.

A quick check of the WIPO website shows the name "XFORCE" also registered by the same entity, Mitsubishi Motors, in the Philippine IPO. So this could also be an even likelier possibility, with the visuals of the teaser even suggesting it.

A compact subcompact

Visually, the new Mitsubishi crossover has similar dimensions to a compact SUV. Just by the XFC Concept's size alone, natural competitors would be the Mazda CX-5 or the Hyundai Tucson. However, Mitsubishi is targeting the subcompact crossover market with a larger product that trumps the types of the Geely Coolray, Hyundai Creta, and the Honda HR-V. 

The subcompact crossover is a growing market, while the more expensive compact crossover category is not as hot as it once was. And it makes sense for Mitsubishi to strike while the iron is hot in the smaller crossover class. 

The production version of the XFC will feature a partnership with Yamaha to equip the upcoming crossover with a premium-sounding concert-hall quality audio experience. 

Mitsubishi also claims the upcoming crossover is specially designed to address ASEAN market concerns with its high-ground clearance and Wet driving mode. And sources have indicated that the production version will be around 80% faithful to the concept car.

Rumors also suggest it will share the same mechanical bits as the popular Mitsubishi Xpander MPV, so a 1.5-liter engine might not be too far off.

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation is still mum on the specifications and the name of the upcoming crossover.
