Hyundai Philippines launches all-new Hyundai Custin to battle it out in the premium MPV segment.

Hyundai Philippines had quite the surprise for October 2023 as the South Korean automaker launched not one, but two new vehicles.

The first is the latest variant of the Hyundai Stargazer called the Stargazer X, while the other is the all-new 2024 Hyundai Custin 7-seater MPV.

The new vehicle will position itself under the Hyundai Staria for those who want a more premium offering, but don’t want to pay the ₱3 million price tag of the full-size van.

Minivan styling with just a hint of SUV

On the outside, the Hyundai Custin shares the corporate design language of the South Korean automaker's vertical design elements, athletic styling and broad front with a massive grille.

It also comes with LED headlights as standard, along with LED daytime running lights.

Moving to the side, the MPV carries a typical minivan side profile with its swept-back roof that terminates in a boxy tailgate. Depending on your chosen variant, you get sliding doors and either 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels.

At the back, the Custin has a boxy rear with a power tailgate option for the top-spec variant. It has angular LED taillights and a light bar stretching across the rear.

Like other Hyundai vehicles, it has reverse lights on the lower bumper and a rear foglight.

Regarding measurements, the Hyundai Custin is 4,950 mm long, 1,850 mm wide and 1,710 mm tall. It also has a wheelbase of 3,055 mm, giving you more room inside the vehicle.

As for its ground clearance, it has a respectable 174 mm, which is good enough for Philippine roads.

Premium interior

When we say premium, we mean it with the Hyundai Custin, which comes with swathes of soft-touch materials around the cabin, leather seats and faux wood trim on the dashboard.

Its gear shifter is unique as instead of a lever, it comes with buttons similar to what you can find in the older-generation Honda CR-V turbodiesel.

The second row is the place to be with the Custin as it gets captain’s seats with Ottomans. Aside from this, it also receives seat ventilation, seat heating and 10-way power adjustability to get you into a comfortable seating position quickly.

For the third row, it's a typical 3-seater bench that doesn’t offer many toys, but comes with fan controls and a USB charging port.

As for technology, the Hyundai MPV has two digital displays: the first is for the instrument cluster, while the other is a 10.4-inch portrait-style display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

It also gets a 360-degree camera, reverse parking and front parking sensors to make tight spaces more manageable.

Turbocharged gasoline power

Under the hood, the Custin is powered by a 1.5-liter inline-4 turbocharged gasoline engine that produces 170 PS and 253 Nm of torque.

It is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels.

It's a first for Hyundai as its typical lineup of vehicles either come naturally aspirated or have a turbodiesel as their motor of choice.

Hyundai Smartsense

The Hyundai Custin is also well-equipped when it comes to safety features with Hyundai Smartsense, which gives it the following :

  • Cruise Control
  • Manual Speed Limit Assist
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Blind Sport Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Safe Exit Assist
  • Driver Attention Warning
  • High Beam Assist
  • Lane Following Assist

Pricing

Hyundai Philippines has given the all-new Custin a competitive price tag as it undercuts a lot of its competition by a sizeable amount.

The all-new MPV is available in two variants:

  • Custin 1.5T GLS AT – ₱1,770,000
  • Custin 1.5T Premium AT – ₱2,080,000

It also comes with Hyundai’s 5-year or 200,000km warranty, whichever comes first.
