Pediatric care requires considerable thought and resources so that the medical needs of young patients are properly addressed.

That’s why the government-run Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) in Quezon City is building a three-floor facility that will serve as a shelter for watchers and recurring outpatient children needing periodic pediatric services.

The Bahay Alalay building will be constructed within PCMC’s compound and have a complete reception, cafeteria, and playroom, along with sleeping quarters that are separate for male and female occupants.

Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) announced in an August 2023 press statement that it has inked an agreement with the hospital to provide ₱1 million worth of equipment and furniture for the new facility upon its completion.

In addition, the company said it will adopt the playroom “to ensure that the children will have an area for fun and games during their stay.”

“Every day, PCMC receives hundreds of children from all over the country and providing a proper shelter for recurring patients and their watchers is a much-needed facility in the hospital,” said IPC president Tetsuya Fujita.

“Isuzu being the ‘Responsible Partner’ cares about the overall well-being and welfare of these children especially those coming from the provinces not having enough money to find a place here in the city,” he added.

PCMC was originally known as the Lungsod ng Kabataan (City for Children) under Presidential Decree 1631, which was issued on August 1979 by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

On November 1986, President Corazon Aquino issued Memorandum Order No. 48 that renamed the hospital the “Philippine Children’s Medical Center.”

The hospital is the country’s premier pediatric center, offering specialized medical services and facilities like the largest intensive care unit for children in the Philippines.

PCMC executive director Dr. Sonia Gonzales thanked the Japanese automaker for partnering with the hospital in this project.

“The support will definitely have a big impact in providing a more decent facility for the parents and watchers of our patients,” she said.

According to IPC, this recent partnership is just one of the many corporate social responsibility projects that it has lined up until the end of 2023.

“As the company moves towards its SDG commitment, IPC is looking at collaborating with different government institutions as well as non-government organizations to support their “Road to Progress” direction by improving company governance all then while helping the society and caring for the environment,” Isuzu Philippines said.
