Honda City vs Nissan Almera vs Toyota Vios: Which B-segment in Philippines offers the best fuel economy?

With claimed fuel consumption for all these newly-introduced B-segment sedans hovering below the 6-litre/100 km mark (2020 Toyota Vios: 5.8-litre/100 km, 2020 Honda City: 5.4-litre/100 km, 2020 Nissan Almera: 5.4-litre/100 km), which one of these non-national B-segment sedans will offer the best fuel consumption under real-world conditions?

To find out, we pitted all three models through our Autofun instrumented tests, covering more than 100 km for each car. The route we tested the cars are similar, though at varying times of the day with different traffic conditions and drivers.

As part of our instrumented tests, we also subjected all three cars through a 0-100 km/h test.

While this may not be an exhaustive test, it is a reasonably realistic estimate of how each car will perform in real-world conditions.

UPDATE: We conducted another test on the Honda City and it returned 5.3-litre/100 km, so average fuel consumption figure is 6.3L/100km.

After putting them through our instrumented tests, the Honda City recorded an average fuel consumption of 7.2-litre/100 km, while the Vios was slightly better, coming in at 6.8-litre/100 km. While the City's result may seem poor, keep in mind that the car has less than 100 km on the odometer. Its fuel economy will improve over time.

The surprising winner here is the Nissan Almera, which managed to return an average fuel consumption figure of 5.8-litre/100 km – not too far from Nissan’s claimed figures.

So there you have it, three of the newest non-national B-segment sedans and their respective real-world fuel consumption figures and the Nissan Almera reigns supreme over its segment rivals.
