Next-generation Ford Territory bags 5-star C-NCAP rating, why does it matter?

The next-generation Ford Territory is relatively new to the global market, debuting in China in May of 2022 under the Ford Equator Sport nameplate. Soon after, the Territory launched in other markets, slowly making the crossover a hit.

While the next-generation Ford Territory initially did not come with crash test results, things have changed as the China New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP) tested the new vehicle and gave it a 5-star rating.

Safety should be a top priority when buying a vehicle, and that's why knowing your new car's crash test rating is essential.

A great improvement

The first generation of the Ford Territory didn’t do too well with its 2018 crash testing results from the C-NCAP. The Ford crossover only got a 3-star rating with its 70.2 out of 100 weighted score.

However, this new crossover version is vastly improved over its predecessor, as it now has a rating of 5 stars. Simply put, it passed more stringent testing over its older version with flying colors, scoring 86.8 out of 100.

Understanding the Chinese NCAP

Unlike the ASEAN NCAP, which has four major categories, the Chinese NCAP only has three, which are Occupant Protection (60%), Pedestrian Protection (15%), and Active Safety (25%), totaling 100 percent. Tests under these individual categories come with their own scores out of 100, which are then converted into percentages against the category's weight.

It's confusing, but the weighted scores are the important data after all the test result calculations.

In that regard, the following are the weighted scores of the next-gen Ford Territory per category:

  • Occupant Protection - 53.9/60
  • Pedestrian protection - 10.9/15
  • Active Safety - 22/25
  • Total = 86.8/100

These points combined give the Territory a final score of 86.8/100, granting it a 5-star rating. Similar to how other NCAP entities test their vehicles, for a car to get a 5-star rating, it must get a final score of at least 80.

Why is the C-NCAP important for the Philippine market?

While an ASEAN-NCAP testing body is available, they have yet to test the next-generation Ford Territory.
However, it is essential to mention that the C-NCAP closely mirrors the testing protocols and procedures of the Euro NCAP.

This means it takes work to get a 5-star safety rating, as the vehicle has to perform well when in an actual crash test and has a stellar lineup of safety features to keep pedestrians and occupants safe. These vehicles also must have ABS with EBD and stability control as standard.

What do you think about the safety of the next-generation Ford Territory?
