When we talk about an affordable sedan, the Toyota Camry is normally not the first car to cross our mind. But with the all-new 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid, you might just opt to take a different perspective. The 2022 Camry is available only as a hybrid in the Philippines and that says a lot when it comes to value for money.
As an executive sedan, the Toyota Camry is squarely positioned for those who are in the upper echelons of society. This doesn't mean however, that they are immune to the effects of the current fuel crisis. Obviously, a fuel efficient car will save a considerable amount of money. But imagine a hybrid that has an engine tuned for fuel-efficency combined with an electric motor to take over acceleration at low speeds. Suddenly, going to the office in metro traffic need not be an exercise in fuel wastage.
Under the hood of the 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid is a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force engine that produces 178 ps and 221 Nm of torque. Pretty decent enough on its own to drive the car places. However, with the motor of the 4th generation hybrid system in play, that figure can go up to 211 ps and 221 Nm of torque. Its engine is mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) for seamless gear ratio shifts. And according to Toyota's own tests, this powertrain can deliver up to 23.8 km/l. An executive sedan that is also a fuel miser, when was the last time that happened?
Because of its Php 2,370,000 price tag, it should be safe to assume that Camry buyers aren't the type to be concerned about fuel-efficiency. But in the odd case they were, we can also assume that the savings in fuel economy alone would be enough to justify the Camry's price. Compared to its rivals, the Honda Accord and the Mazda 6, the 2022 Toyota Cammry surely has several aces up its sleeve when it comes to overall value, environmental impact, safety and backseat plushness. Add to that the hybrid system's ability to save fuel, then we just might have a clear winner in our hands.
