Does the 2022 Toyota Fortuner's Fuel Economy Break the Bank?

As diesel prices rise higher and are now at par with that of gasoline, some diesel-run vehicle owners have been rethinking their stance on what was then the more economical alternative to gasoline-engined cars. Some have even been reeling from the price hikes and are ultimately considering selling their vehicles.

Regardless of whether or not your vehicle is fuel efficient, the price of fuel has increased immensely over the past months. If you're one of those on the cusp of making a decision about the viability of your vehicle, then this could be an excellent time to take a step back and rethink your position. Especially if you own a Toyota Fortuner.

Across the range of Fortuner variants are two engine choices. Let's start with the engine from the G and A variants. Under their hoods is a 2.4-liter 2DG-FTV Diesel Engine. This produces 150 ps and 400 newton meters of torque. This is actually not too bad at all. In terms of fuel economy, this engine can consume 9 to 12 kilometers per liter, while on the highway, it can convert your single liter of diesel to a whopping 21 kilometers.

Of course, these figures are taken from the engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The same engine can also be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. Some Fortuner owners can argue that the manual transmission is more fuel efficient than the automatic, but driving habits, route, road condition, weather, and the like also come into play.

The second engine for the Q and the LTD variant, as well as the GR-S, is the much bigger 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV Diesel Engine. Notice that there is no gasoline engine in the Fortuner line-up, so be careful when gassing up. This produces a monster 204 ps and 500 newton meters of torque, close to what its PPV competitors put out. The fuel economy of this engine is slightly lower, of course, and slightly worse if on the LTD 4x4. The numbers vary but a respectable 8 to 10 kilometers by the liter in the city, and  17 kilometers per liter on the highway is actually not bad at all.

If you think about it, these figures make the Fortuner comparable to a compact sedan like the Vios in terms of fuel consumption. So, if you're thinking of selling your Fortuner to get a Vios, or if you're weighing which one to buy and you're leaning towards the latter, consider this: they almost share the same fuel efficiency.

If you want to drastically change your fuel spending and you want an fuel-efficient daily driver, you'll have to get the Wigo to really hit that sweet spot. Otherwise, enjoy the Fortuner.
