Toyota Indonesia has exported over 2 million cars and to begin shipping Fortuner to Australia

Toyota Indonesia has reached the 2 million export sales mark in early February 2022, 35 years after the company first started shipping cars overseas, and 4 years after surpassing 1 million cumulative exports in 2018.

At the same time, the company will begin exports of the Toyota Fortuner to Australia in March 2022. Indonesian president, Joko Widodo, was present at the commemorative ceremony held at the company's Karawang, West Java assembly plant.

That said, the company is also locally-assembling a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) model later this year, and this has also been earmarked for overseas markets.

Toyota Indonesia's export activities started in 1987 with the shipment of the 3rd generation Kijang Super – the Unser's predecessor – to Brunei Darussalam with a modest volume of 50 units per month.

The Innova remains a hugely popular export product

Since the introduction of the Innovative Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) project in 2004, Toyota Indonesia's role rose to be the production, creating opportunities to export 7,000 units annually to various countries in addition to meeting domestic demands.

Currently, models like the Kijang Innova, Fortuner, Lite Ace/Town Ace, Vios, Sienta, Veloz, Avanza, RushAgya, and Raize as well as a multitude of parts and tools are exported to more than 80 countries worldwide.

Toyota Indonesia's export volume increased to more than 100,000 per annum since 2012, even surpassing 200,000 units per year in pre-pandemic 2018 and 2019. After a 30% dip in 2020, the company recorded exports of 188,000 units in 2021.
