Mini EVs are everywhere! Wuling Air EV launches in India as the MG Comet

MG India kicks off its mini electric vehicle (EV) trend in India with the launch of the MG Comet.

The Wuling Air EV is available in two variants; the first is a short-wheelbase model, and the other is an extended one.

The extended wheelbase version measures 2,974 mm long, 1,505 mm in width, and 1,631 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,010 mm. Its shorter counterpart measures 2,599 mm long, 1,505 mm wide, and  1,640 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 1,635 mm.

The extended wheelbase model has a curb weight of 860 kg, while its shorter variant has a curb weight of 760 kg.

Under its parent company, SAIC, the Wuling Mini Air ev has been rebadged as an MG in India.

The MG Comet is the extended wheelbase version and retains its three-door four-seater design and layout.

Regarding technology, the MG Comet is well equipped as it has two 10-inch displays inside the cabin. The first is for the instrument cluster, while the second is for its infotainment system. The latter will use Wuling’s Ling operating system and will likely have its applications.

A phone application for the MG Comet lets owners check on their vehicle’s status, remote start it, and even control the air conditioning system.

Powering the MG comment is a 50 kW 68 PS electric motor paired with a 20 or 25 kWh battery pack. It is expected to have 300 kilometers of driving range from a full charge. The mini EV also has a top speed of 100 km/h and comes with DC fast charging support.

The MG Comet is expected to hit Indian showroom floors by mid-2023 and will go up against the likes of the Tata Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3.

There has yet to be any news if this new mini EV will make it into the local market as MG Philippines may have plans to launch a full-size EV first before the Comet.

But as we have seen with Jetour Auto Philippines acquiring the distributorship of the Chery QQ Ice Cream Sundae over Chery Auto Philippines, strange things can happen.

Is now the right time for manufacturers to start bringing more affordable EVs into the market?
