Only zero-emissions cars to be sold in New York by 2035

The Big Apple is following the lead of California as New York's governor announces that the state will only allow zero-emissions vehicles to be sold in the state.

Governor Kathy Hochul, in a Tweet, shared that "All new vehicles sold in New York must be zero emissions by 2035."

"By revving up our clean transportation transition and making major investments to make EVs more accessible, we’re supercharging our fight against climate change," Hochul said in her Tweet.

This announcement includes passenger cars, pickups, and SUVs. This also means that hybrids, which generally have an internal combustion engine on board to charge batteries and assist the vehicle's electric motors, will lose another primary market in the US.

To achieve this goal, the state will introduce the following zero-emission vehicle milestones:

  • 35% of new vehicles by 2026
  • 68% by 2030
  • 100% by 2045

New York will also provide up to $2,000 for car buyers who opt for full-electric vehicles. At the same time, it will also support municipalities that will purchase zero-emission vehicles and have EV chargers installed.

The Federal government will likewise support this initiative by providing $175 million to help build a charging network in the state.

Setting targets and goals is one way of showing how serious the government is about achieving its objectives. Do you think the Philippine government should adopt a similar approach?
