2023 Mazda2 to launch in Thailand on June 21, will the Philippines get it next?

The 2023 Mazda2 made its global debut in its home country of Japan in January of this year. However, the updated vehicle is making the rounds internationally, with Thailand being the next market to receive it. 

Mazda Thailand has announced that it will launch the updated Mazda2 on June 21 with two distinct looks for the vehicle. 

The launch news comes from our friends from Wpacar Malaysia, who have provided us with photos.

Styling and trims

According to the Thai publication Headlightmag, the updated vehicle will reportedly have three styling packages for the hatchback models. The styling options for the sedan Mazda2 have yet to be determined. However, it is expected to carry a similar front fascia. 

The first is the BD variant with a flushed grille and two-tone wheels. Next is the Sunlit Citrus model, which has a similar grille o the BD but does not come with two-tone wheels.

Finally, the Sports variant carries a gloss black mesh grille but has identical features to the previous models with a few add-ons.

Same engine options

As the updates to the Mazda2 are predominantly to its exterior, its engine options have remained the same. The updated vehicle is still powered by either a 1.3-liter SkyActiv-G gasoline engine or a 1.5-liter SkyActiv-D diesel motor.

Transmission options remain the same regardless of which engine you choose, as it still comes with a 6-speed automatic gearbox. 

Will it come to the Philippines?

The updated Mazda2 may come to the Philippines if there is still demand for the car. However, it is only available as a hatchback in its 1.5 SkyActiv-G AT Premium trim. 

Mazda Philippines has not officially announced anything concerning the Mazda2. Still, things aren’t looking too good for the nameplate, as it is one of the most expensive options for a subcompact hatchback out there. Its subcompact crossover pricing hasn't helped it much.  Most of the Japanese automaker’s local sales are from its crossover lineup or the Mazda BT-50 pickup truck. Regardless, it seems that the Japanese automaker won’t bring in the new Mazda2 and may drop it entirely from the Philippine lineup.
