SNEAK PEEK: 2023 GWM Haval H6 first-drive impressions

GWM Philippines recently invited us for a test drive event at the Batangas Racing Circuit to see what their cars offer.

They had three models to test at the event and we got our hands on all of them for a quick drive. The first of the three models we tried was the 2023 GWM Haval H6 HEV.

It is one of the hybrid crossovers the brand will launch soon as part of its initial four-model lineup.

The GWM Haval H6 is a five-seater crossover with a 1.5-liter turbocharged hybrid powertrain that aims to take on established contenders in the compact crossover segment.

It brings features such as a 360-degree camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging and adaptive cruise control, just to name a few.

Here are our first impressions of the 2023 Haval H6, as we only had a limited experience with the vehicle.

Exterior

Style-wise, the crossover carries a broad front fascia with a massive grille.

While the grille’s size is predominantly for design, it does have functional openings. It also has LED headlights and daytime running lights, but unfortunately, we could not test them out.

Aside from this, it was typical crossover styling on the sides of the vehicle with a small kink in the back near the C-pillar. The H6 also has body cladding on the sides but is subtle in its use.

The Haval H6 has long horizontal taillights at the back that appear connected. The crossover also gets reflectors mounted in the middle of the rear quarter panel and a black lower bumper with small fins to help direct airflow.

Interior

The interior of the Haval H6 is subtle but premium in its execution.

The multi-layer dashboard design looks great and modern, but is simultaneously functional in how the features are laid out.

We must note that, just like other Chinese cars, using the climate controls on the touchscreen can be hard to get used to. While the touchscreen is responsive, changing screens whenever you want to adjust the air conditioning is just a hassle.

Driving experience

The GWM Haval H6 has a 1.5-liter turbocharged hybrid drivetrain.

It produces 240 PS and 530 Nm of torque. Power delivery is smooth; however, once you hit boost, you get a soft rush of acceleration.

The torque is more than enough to push you back into your seat, but not in a violent manner.

The 1.5-liter produces quite a lot of power as it could rocket the rather heavy hybrid from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 10 seconds. Braking action is also great with the vehicle as it could stop from 80 km/h to 0 in just a few meters.

We must note that the vehicle's suspension is aimed toward the comfortable side, so even while cornering, you can feel the vehicle's heft as you turn. It doesn’t like quick changes in direction as the vehicle's weight takes time to shift from one side to the other.

Does the all-new Haval H6 pique your interest? Make sure to stick around and wait for our full review of the 2023 Haval H6 once it launches in the Philippines.
