- Toyota sold a record number of hybrids in China
- Sales in China is up
Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Toyota has bucked that trend and posted an impressive 50 percent increase in hybrid vehicle (HEV) sales in China, with 475,900 units sold.
This sales figures mean that hybrids now make up nearly 25 percent of Toyota’s total sales in China, up from 17 percent in 2020. This is the first time Toyota released specific sales figures for the hybrid model it sells in China.
According to a report by Nikkei Asia, Toyota experienced an impressive 8.2 percent growth in China, with 1.94 million units sold in the Middle Kingdom.
Part of the reason how Toyota managed to record such sales is because they managed to weather the chip shortage better than other manufacturers.
Fellow Japanese manufacturer Honda did not fare as well as Toyota in China, with sales of Honda dropping 4 percent to 1.56 million units, signifying the first time sales has dropped in 3 years.
Although the sales of Honda hybrid went up 16 percent to 233,801 units, total sales still took a beating due to the aforementioned chip shortage.
As for Nissan, sales went down 5.2 percent to 1.38 million units. It marked the third consecutive year of sales dropping for Nissan.
Overall, vehicle sales in China reached almost 26 million units, marking an increase for the first time in four year since 2021. Despite the microchip shortage, the China Associated of Automobile Manufacturers said that sales of new energy vehicles have shot up.
