The Perodua Axia has already been launched in Malaysia, featuring more technology than ever, raising the bar for entry-level hatchbacks. This was followed by the Daihatsu Ayla and Toyota Agya launches in Indonesia.
For the uninitiated, all three are related and form the basis of what we know as the Toyota Wigo. The model rollouts in Malaysia and Indonesia give us a good idea of what we can expect the next-gen small Toyota hatchback will carry with it once it launches locally.
Here are the top five features from the 2023 Perodua Axia, Daihatus Ayla and Toyota Agya we want to see in the next-generation Toyota Wigo.
A new D-CVT
According to our colleagues from Wapcar Malaysia, the Perodua Axia now comes with a new Dual-Mode CVT (D-CVT) which is a combination of steel chain and planetary gear set. The latter is used to complement the steel belt to reduce a typical CVT’s rubber feel, making acceleration feel more traditional.
The new CVT gives the small hatchback near infinite gear ratios available, allowing it to maximize its fuel efficiency capabilities. This CVT is similar to what is locally available in the Toyota Raize.
Wapcar Malaysia also reported that the new hatchback can achieve 27.4km/l as claimed by Perodua. If true, the new D-CVT will make the new Wigo just as fuel efficient as its much bigger hybrid siblings.
A more powerful engine
The Toyota Agya launched in Indonesia comes with a 1.2-liter gasoline engine, the same motor found in the naturally aspirated Toyota Raize. However, in Malaysia, the Perodua Axia retains the 1.0-liter motor from the previous generation.
According to Perodua, this was done to keep the SRP of the Axia within the model's target market.
While the Philippine specifications for the hatchback are still unknown, we hope the Japanese automaker brings it in with the 1.2-liter engine.
The new motor will increase the power output of the next-gen Wigo, and it may also help streamline Toyota’s local lineup by letting it share the same parts as the Raize. However, it will likely also mean a price increase for the little Wigo.
A new digital instrument cluster
The 7-inch digital instrument cluster is another feature we want to see in the next-gen Toyota Wigo. It's a new feature in the Perodua Axia in Malaysia and the Toyota Agya in Indonesia.
The display is similar to the Raize, with multiple layouts available to suit the driver's needs while helping give the small hatchback a more techy vibe.
The 9-inch infotainment system
According to the brochure of the Perodua Axia, it comes with a 9-inch infotainment system. However, across the border, only an 8-inch version of the display is offered in the Indonesian Agya.
According to our colleagues in Wapcar.my, the Perodua Axia only has Smartlink mobile phone integration while Autofun Indonesia reports a similar Mirrorlink smartphone connectivity in the Toyota Agya.
While it is still unknown if the Philippine-spec head unit will come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, we hope it does, as something similar is available in the Toyota Raize.
Better safety
The Toyota Wigo currently sold in the Philippines only has two airbags. However, the small hatchback has upped its game in other countries by adding more airbags and safety tech.
According to Wapcar Malaysia, the Perodua Axia hatchback is available with six airbags. It also has the brand’s version of Perodua Smart Drive Assist with features such as automatic high beam, lane change warning and lane keeping, and a blind spot monitor, all of which work similarly to Toyota’s Safety Sense Safety Suite.
While it only got 4 stars in the ASEAN NCAP tests, it is still a safe bet for what it is, a budget daily commuter. Do note that any additional features from what is currently available now with the Wigo will likely come with corresponding price adjustments.
Toyota Motor Philippines is likely busy finding the right balance between new generation improvements and keeping the cost pallatable to Wigo buyers.
