If you think the demand for hybrid electric vehicles is starting to wane, think again.
Our friends at sister publication WapCar Malaysia reported on January 11, 2023 that the all-new 2023 Toyota Prius was sold out in just one day in Japan.
There’s now a 12-month waiting list for the Prius 2.0-liter variant, while those who want the 1.8-liter model will have to wait at least six months.
It’s the same situation in the United States, where it could take American buyers up to a year to get their hands on Toyota’s long-running hybrid.
The Japanese carmaker’s manufacturing plant in Tsutsumi is the sole producer of the Prius. And things aren’t helped by the ongoing disruptions in the supply chain and in semiconductor allocation.
The all-new Prius was launched in Japan on Nov. 16, 2022.
Unlike the previous model, the current Prius sports what Toyota calls a “hammerhead-shark-like design,” along with a pert rear end.
Performance has also improved substantially, with the standard 2.0-liter hybrid version pumping out 193 PS.
There’s also a plug-in hybrid Prius, which is expected to launch on March 2023. Packing 223 PS, it can do 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds.
The whole car sits on the second generation of the Toyota New Global Architecture platform, variants of which are used on fully electric models like the Toyota bZ3 sedan and the Toyota bZ4X and Lexus RZ crossovers.
The 2023 Prius also gets additional reinforcements compared to the old model, along with MacPherson front suspension and double-wishbone rear suspension.
Do you think the all-new Prius would be as warmly received if it were sold in the Philippines?
