Mazda may introduce changes to electric-vehicle roadmap ahead of 2025 rollout 01

Among the major Japanese carmakers, Mazda has been one of the last to jump on the full electric vehicle (EV) bandwagon.

Indeed, the company remains to be a bastion of the internal-combustion engine with its plans to revive its famous rotary engine in 2023 for the MX-30 plug-in hybrid crossover.

In addition, its models still use the highly efficient Skyactiv line of engines.

These include new turbocharged inline-6 gasoline and diesel motors for the recently introduced, rear-wheel-drive Mazda CX-60 crossover. However, the CX-60 also includes mild-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid variants.

The Mazda CX-60 is a rear-wheel-drive crossover that features plug-in hybrid technology.

Nonetheless, the Japanese carmaker is planning to roll out on November 2022 some revisions to its business plans over the next eight years, which include prioritizing profitability per vehicle rather than outright sales volume.

Mazda introduced on June 2021 its "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030" program, which includes plans to introduce its first EV by 2025 using what it calls the "SKYACTIV EV Scalable Architecture" platform.

By 2030, the company also intends to sell one EV for every four cars that it produces.

The program also plans to roll out five hybrid models, five plug-in hybrid models and three EV models between 2022 and 2025, mainly for Japan, Europe, the United States, China and the ASEAN region.

Do you think Mazda should be more aggressive with their EV program or should it focus on refining proven internal-combustion technology?
