Omoda, one of the three main brands of Chery International, announced that it will be entering the Philippine market as early as October 2023.

It will bring in the Omoda 5 crossover, which will go up against the Geely Coolray, MG ZST and the Honda HR-V, and be priced under ₱1.5 million to keep it competitive.

The Chinese automaker also announced in a June 2023 press statement that it will bring in the electric vehicle (EV) version of the Omoda 5, which will be part of the brand's lineup after it officially debuts.

What to expect from the Omoda 5 EV

Omoda 5 EV side profile

The Omoda 5 EV retains a similar shape to its non-electric counterpart, but will carry a sharper and more aggressive look.

As there is no more gasoline engine under the hood, the grill of the EV will be different, giving it a sleeker appearance.

As for its features, the Omoda 5 EV has a "young, tech-oriented theme" with advanced features, such as a 16-function active-safety suite that includes:

  • Front Collision Avoidance
  • Front Departure Reminder
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Blind Spot Detection
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking
  • Driver Monitoring System

Thanks to these features, the Omoda 5 was able to score the maximum 5-star safety rating during the latest round of testing done by the European New Car Assessment Programme.

Aside from these, the crossover will also have a 360-degree camera and a heads-up display that are all projected through two 10.25-inch screens on the dashboard.

Comfort and convenience

The Omoda 5 EV will offer power-adjustable seats with a heating and ventilation function, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto capabilities.

All windows have a one-pinch auto function, while the driver has remote start, keyless entry and a remote switch for the air-conditioning – all with a push of a button on the keyfob.

For entertainment, the Omoda 5 is equipped with an 8-speaker Sony sound system. Other amenities for the EV include three high-speed USB ports, two power outlets and a wireless charging pad for mobile phones.

Up to 450 km range

Under the hood, the Omoda 5 EV is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a liquid cooling system.

It's estimated to push out around 204 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Omoda said the EV can travel between 300 to 450 kilometers with a full charge.

In addition, an AC/DC charging module comes standard with the car, along with a portable 220-volt charger. It lets you charge the vehicle at home using your wall socket or an EV charging station.

Omoda Philippines has yet to release the charging times for its upcoming EV, but we expect to be within the industry standards of half a day with the 220-volt charger and a couple of hours with the AC/DC charging module.

Pricing for the Omoda EV is rumored to be somewhere below the ₱2 million range as it will enjoy the Philippine government's tax exemption programs for EVs

It will also be exempt from number coding under Republic Act 11697 or the "Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act."

Are the features of the upcoming Omoda 5 EV enticing enough for you to get one?

Did you like our story? Make sure to give it a 5-star rating if you do.
