We Filipinos are very fond of the saying, "Saka na lang." Especially when there's a lack of money to spend on something. We say this because we don't have the means to pursue or buy something. It's like, "I like that dress, but saka na lang." Or, "I like to travel, but saka na lang."
We are sometimes deprived of the things that we want to have and want to do because we are aware of how costly they would be, like going for a road trip every weekend, or unwinding and relaxing outside the city before heading back to work on a Monday. However, instead of getting excited about that fun road trip, we end up stressed by just thinking about how much would it cost. More so now that fuel prices have doubled in price from not too long ago.

The distance from my place here in the Metro to Baguio City is around 273 kilometers. If I were to take a sedan like the Honda City. to Baguio, it would need around 31 liters of fuel for the car to get there. And if fuel costs Php 80 per liter, it's tantamount to saying that I will have to spend Php 2,480 to get to Baguio City. Or Php 4,960 for a back and forth run. This means I have to allocate around Php 19,480 to cover weekend fuel expenses alone. That's almost as expensive as a new smartphone or two months' worth of groceries for a family of five!
This is based on the Honda City's 9 to 14 km/l consumption inside the city. Of course, under light to moderate traffic situations. Furthermore, its fuel-efficiency might even be better on the highway where it can reportedly do 22 to 23 km/l figures.
So if you're living on a budget, as you should, it would be a worthwhile exercise to compute the impact of your car's fuel expenses on your cost of living. And it all starts with how fuel-efficient your ride will be.
