Battle of the pseudo-SUVs: 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross vs 2023 Honda BR-V

Battle of the pseudo-SUVs: 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross vs 2023 Honda BR-V 01

When it comes to practical and affordable seven-seater MPVs, the most popular choices that come to mind are the all-new Honda BR-V and the soon-to-be-launched 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross. This will surely make it difficult for buyers to choose which of the two they should get.

But suppose the local spec 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross is close to being kitted out like the one launched during last year’s 29th GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show. In that case, there’s a lot to look forward to as it promises to be better than the previous model.

For starters, many exterior changes have been made to the updated model, making it look more like an SUV. But what’s surprising here is that several components were adopted from the Mitsubishi Montero Sport.

On the other side, we have the second-generation Honda BR-V launched late last year. It looks so different from the previous model as it redefines today’s subcompact MPV by combining the looks of an SUV with the size and practicality of a small 7-seater that appeals to most Filipino families.

Exterior

The updated 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross looks much like the Mitsubishi Montero Sport and the rest of the brand's lineup. This is mainly because of the newest iteration of the Dynamic Shield face, which is now connected to a redesigned front bumper. It now comes with fender flares and a more muscular stance with 17-inch alloy wheels.

On the other hand, we have the all-new Honda BR-V that also adopts Honda’s signature design language, as it appears to be more like a crossover than an MPV. A chrome strip highlights the upper part of the grille, which comes with LED headlights and daytime running lamps. Similar to the features found on the CR-V, it also has a slim fender flare that runs across the rocker panels.

Interior

Inside, the 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross gets an 8-inch digital gauge cluster and a steering wheel that looks exactly like what the Montero Sport has. The updates of the Xpander Cross also include an updated dashboard with high-quality and soft-to-the-touch materials. Storage-wise, the 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross offers lots of space to stow away items and luggage.

The all-new Honda BR-V sports a modern cabin style with a well-laid instrument panel. There’s a 7-inch infotainment system that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. Bluetooth and USB connectivity are standard across all models of the BR-V.

Engine Power

The 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross retains the reliable 1.5-Liter (4A91) engine with 105 horsepower and 141 Nm of torque. Even though other Asian countries have adopted a CVT, our local-spec Xpander Cross still relies on a 4-speed automatic transmission.

The all-new Honda BR-V has a slightly more powerful  1.5-liter DOHC naturally-aspirated gasoline engine that produces 121 PS and 145 Nm torque and is mated to either a CVT or a 6-speed manual transmission.

Suspension

The 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross comes with upgraded suspension components, which supposedly include the same shock absorbers that the Mitsubishi Montero Sport uses. Apart from the larger diameter of the shocks, this also slightly increases the ground clearance compared to other seven-seater SUVs. Despite the added clearance, Mitsubishi has tweaked the valving of the shocks to offer a balance between passenger comfort and overall ride quality.

As for the all-new Honda BR-V, it similarly employs MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam axle at the rear. The front brakes are ventilated discs, while the back has drums.

Safety

Extra safety features have been added to the 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross, such as Speed Sensitive Automatic Door Lock, New Electric Parking Brake (EPB) with Brake Auto Hold, and ABS, EBD with HSA features. But if the local spec is much like what’s offered in Indonesia, the Xpander Cross might come with Mitsubishi’s Active Yaw Control (AYC). This technology is found on high-performance Lancer Evolution models and promotes vehicle control during slippery road conditions.

The all-new Honda BR-V also includes a comprehensive list of safety features like ABS, EBD, vehicle stability assist, hill start assist, and more. But the Honda Sensing suite of safety technology is hard to beat with adaptive cruise control, auto high beam, collision mitigation braking system, lane keep assist, road departure mitigation, and lane departure warning.

Which MPV is the better SUV?

While the specifications, variants, and corresponding price points of the local-spec 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross have yet to be announced, we can see that both vehicles come well-equipped. This includes dimensions, engine, seating capacity, and comprehensive features.

But it’s the safety aspect where the all-new Honda BR-V seems to have the upper hand with its Honda Sensing Technology, and something that also comes at a premium as it also costs more.

On the other hand, Mitsubishi is opting to play it safe by sticking to tried and tested technology that won’t break the bank and making it more appealing to the masses.

Which consideration is more important to you?
