Vingroup’s Vinfast brand has unveiled its first mini electric vehicle (EV). It is a small two-door SUV with body cladding and boxy front fascia. Like many other automakers, the Vietnamese brand has succumbed to the charm of mini EVs that are all the rage over in China.

While you would expect this vehicle to be for the Chinese market, it isn’t as it was designed for Vietnam.

It looks similar to the 3-door Suzuki Jimny's overall design and shape. It has a short hood, two LED headlights, and a large bumper that meshes with the vehicle’s body cladding. It also receives a blacked-out roof that extends midway to its C-pillar.

There are very few body lines on the sides of the EV, with smooth surfaces and shapes taking up most of its side profile.

At the back, the mini EV SUV has LED taillights and a large tailgate garnish that bears the brand’s logo. Like the front, its rear bumper is big and bulges out of the vehicle. It also rides on 16-inch wheels and will be available with a wide range of body colors.

Room for 5?

Inside, the Vinfast VF3 adopts a minimalist approach to its cabin, similar to many other mini EVs. The Vietnamese brand says there will be room for five occupants in the vehicle with enough space for some luggage.

It also comes with a digital instrument display cluster which will likely show its speed plus its available range.

We noticed that the mini EV does not have any physical buttons or a center console that could indicate space-saving measures. However, Vinfast says that the vehicle has basic intelligent features that are fully integrated to ensure a "comfortable and convenient user experience."

How about power?

Details about its powertrain are still unknown, but Vinfast says it will "offer impressive travel distance" that is tailored to Vietnamese drivers.

The automaker did not reveal any other specifications, but given its compact size, it will likely be rear-wheel drive and will have a single motor.

The Vinfast VF3 will reportedly come with two trims, Eco and Plus, which will be priced accessibly for the masses.

Unfortunately, buyers will have to wait a little longer for the EV, as the Vietnamese automaker will only start taking orders for it in September of 2023, with deliveries expected to begin in the third quarter of 2024.

What do you think of the Vinfast VF3?
