Slated to be formally launched in the Philippine market by the end of this month, the updated 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross features a host of interesting improvements. This is largely based on the updated Mitsubishi Xpander Cross launched during the Gaikindo Indonesia International Motor Show last year. Judging from how it looks, there’s much to look forward to as it promises to be better than the previous model.

Apart from the numerous improvements on the exterior and interior, one of the aspects worth looking into this seven-seater MPV is its improved ride and handling with the upgraded rear suspension components.

This is because Mitsubishi aims to instill an adventurous look and feel towards the 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross,  a common trait among almost all crossovers and SUVs.

Higher Ground Clearance and Upgraded Dampers

To improve the suspension’s overall handling and capability to handle extra load plus unpaved roads, Mitsubishi equipped the Xpander Cross with the same shock absorbers that the Indonesian Pajero Sport uses (Montero Sport for us).

Apart from the larger diameter of the shocks, this also slightly increases the ground clearance compared to other seven-seater SUVs.

Despite the added clearance, Mitsubishi has tweaked the valving of the shocks to offer a balance between passenger comfort and overall ride quality.

"In the shock absorber section, there is also a valve change so that the damping quality is more optimal," explained Arif Dwianto, Head of Training Section of PT Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Sales Indonesia (MMKSI), in his official statement.

Better Traction on Slippery Roads

To make the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross safer, Mitsubishi has equipped it with Active Yaw Control (AYC).

Found on high-performance Lancer Evolution models, this technology was first developed by Mitsubishi to promote vehicle control during slippery road conditions.

The AYC differential uses a torque transfer mechanism to control rear wheel torque for different driving conditions, enhancing cornering performance by limiting the yaw moment acting on the vehicle. AYC also acts like a limited-slip differential by controlling the rear wheel slip to improve traction.

Additional insulators to make the cabin more comfortable

Still found underneath the car, it turns out that the updated 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross also has a more soundproof cabin, eliminating unwanted road noise for more comfortable ride quality. The secret lies in using more insulators under the bonnet and the firewall panel. Bulkheads are also installed on each side to prevent noise when opening the door. Not only that, but the 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross also gets a damping material under the hood to further minimize engine noise.

Will all these new features introduced in the Indonesian market make it here in the Philippines? We have a few more days to find out.
